THE ISLAND 🏝️

An island is a piece of land that is completely surrounded by water. Unlike continents, islands are much smaller in size, although some islands can be quite large. They can be found in oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes.

The island 

Islands form in various ways, mainly due to natural geological and environmental processes. The major causes include:

1. Volcanic Activity – When underwater volcanoes erupt, they can build up layers of lava that rise above the ocean surface, creating volcanic islands.

Example: Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean.

2. Tectonic Movements – Movements of Earth's tectonic plates can lift parts of the sea floor above sea level, forming islands.

Example: Japan is a result of tectonic activity.

3. Coral Growth – In warm ocean waters, coral reefs can grow and form islands known as coral islands.

Example: Maldives in the Indian Ocean.

4. Erosion and Deposition – Rivers and oceans can erode land or deposit sand and sediment to form islands, especially near coastlines.

Example: Barrier Islands along the Gulf Coast of the U.S.

Types of Islands

1. Continental Islands

These islands were once connected to a continent and broke off due to rising sea levels or tectonic activity.

Example: Madagascar

2. Oceanic Islands

These are formed by volcanic eruptions in the ocean and have never been part of a continent.

Example: Iceland

3. Coral Islands (Atolls)

Formed from coral reefs that build up over time.

Example: Fiji

4. Artificial Islands

Man-made islands created by humans through land reclamation.

Example: Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.
